For flaunting Francophilia in the kitchen, Thomas Keller will join Alice Waters and Julia Child as the only Americans to be named Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, according to a blog post from The New York Times. Fancy that! Which it will be, in all likelihood, at the March 29 ceremony at Per Se where the one and only Paul Bocuse will present Chef Keller with the award. The French Legion of Honor was created in 1802 by that mighty but vertically challenged lover of all things French, Napoleon Bonaparte, as a way of giving a high-five, in the form of a sort of knighthood distinction, to those who effectively purported all-things French in their field.
