Remember when New York City banned the sale of sodas over 16oz last summer? Well, that won’t happen anytime soon in Mississippi. The Magnolia State governor, Phil Bryant, backs a bill that is awaiting his signature after getting through the state senate. The bill was introduced by Republican Sen. Tony Smith and prevents local governments from requiring nutritional information, restricting portion sizes, or barring toys in kids’ meals. It should be noted that 2011 federal rankings list Mississippi as the most obese state in the union with nearly 35 percent of adults very fat.
UPDATE: Just a day before the NYC ban on large sodas was to take effect (and a day after this initial post), a A New York State judge has halted the ban.
